The Unbiased Science Podcast på Instagram: “Dr. Christina Parks, a woman who is a teacher for a Christian homeschool organization, gave testimony at a Michigan hearing about a bill that would prevent employers from mandating vaccines for employees, making unvaccinated employees wear masks, or asking about vaccination status. This bill would be incredibly harmful to public health efforts. Christina Parks made numerous false claims. Here, we focus on her claims about the COVID-19 vaccines specifically (but keep an eye out for a future post on flu vaccines).Her primary claim is that COVID-19 vaccines do not prevent transmission of the virus. This is utterly false. Her evidence is a link to an anti-vax video that shows public health officials saying that they don’t know yet if the vaccines prevent transmission IN JANUARY. We didn’t know then, but we do now! COVID-19 vaccines reduce transmission. They reduce the risk of infection and length of infection, both of which reduce transmission.She also claims that vaccines make people more likely to get infected from future variants than if they weren’t vaccinated. This claim comes from a pre-print study that she grossly misinterpreted. The study actually showed that vaccines are effective against the Delta variant, but antibody neutralization may be reduced compared to other strains. The study looked at artificial mutations that may reduce effectiveness. This is not evidence for her claim that antibodies “help” the virus infect cells. She references alleged “CDC whistleblower” William Thompson, who claimed that CDC destroyed data that linked MMR vaccines & autism in African American boys. This references a problematic reanalysis of a study that produced the results Thompson claimed, but this reanalysis was RETRACTED for inappropriate analysis. They used “data dredging”, where one looks through data to find a small cluster that they can use to support their conclusion – literal cherry-picking. This is not a valid way to analyze data. Decades of data demonstrate NO LINK between vaccines and autism. Dr. Parks’ claims are false, misleading, and potentially very dangerous. Vaccines are safe, effective, and our best tool for getting out of this pandemic.”
